First found in Bourgogne where they were anciently seated and functioned as officers of the mounted connstabulary (Maréchaussés) of Bourgogne and Bresse.
Some of the first settlers of this name or some of its variants were: Pierre Thibault who arrived in Quebec in 1748 from Guyenne; Charles Thibault arrived in Quebec in 1739 from Ile de France; Guillaume Thibault settled in Quebec in 1655 from Normandy. In Newfoundland, three brothers, Tibbo, originally Thibeau came to Newfoundland via England in the mid 18th century, Jonathon settled at Grand Bank before 1817.
