Things I forgot 6 days ago...
Sunday, 10 February. Nigeria ended its 19-year wait by winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the 3rd time after defeating Burkina Faso 1-0 in the Final in Johannesburg. Sunday Mba scored the only goal of the match in the 39th minute and during the trophy presentation 3 players have been awarded; Nigeria's Victor Moses gets the Samsung Fair Player of the Tournament while the Pepsi Tournament Topscorer award went to his teammate Emmanuel Emenike with 4 goals and finally Burkina Faso's Jonathan Pitroipa gets the Orange Man of the Tournament.

Something I forgot last Sunday...
Sunday, 24 February. Swansea City creates history by winning the Capital One Cup (formerly the Carling Cup) for the 1st time after demolishing League Two side Bradford City 5-0 in the Final courtesy of goals from Nathan Dyer (16, 47), Michu (40) and Jonathan de Guzmán (59-pen., 91). In the 56th minute Bradford goalkeeper Matt Duke received his marching orders for tripping de Guzmán in the goal area; his position was taken by Jon McLaughlin, who replaced Bermudian forward Nahki Wells a minute later. The Canadian-born Dutch ace would then score a penalty for the Swans in the 59th minute shortly after McLaughlin's entry. An immense victory over the Bantams after the final whistle also gave Swansea, managed by former Denmark star Michael Laudrup, a chance to receive the Capital One Cup from Fabrice Muamba, who retired from football last year after suffering a heart attack while playing for Bolton Wanderers.

Speaking of creating history...
Saturday, 11 May. Wigan Athletic creates history by winning the F.A. Cup for the 1st time after a 1-0 victory over Manchester City at Wembley. The Citizens were down to 10 men when Pablo Zabaleta received his 2nd yellow card in the 84th minute following a foul over Wigan's Callum McManaman. Ben Watson, who came on as a substitute for Jordi Gómez, scored the only goal of the game in the 91st minute to secure victory for the Latics.

Note: Wigan midfielder Callum McManaman is a distant relative of Liverpool legend Steve McManaman.

One more history in the making...
Wednesday, 15 May. Chelsea, last year's UEFA Champions League winners, wins the UEFA Europa League for the 1st time after defeating Portuguese side Benfica 2-1 in the Final in Amsterdam, the Dutch capital. After both teams were held to a goalless draw in the 1st half Fernando Torres put the Blues in front in the 60th minute. Then it was Paraguayan defender Óscar Cardozo's turn to equalize for the Eagles by scoring a penalty 8 minutes later following a foul committed by César Azpilicueta in the Chelsea penalty area. As the game draws towards full-time Blues defender Branislav Ivanović scored a towering header in the 93rd minute to secure victory, and Chelsea in the end became the first team to lift both of UEFA's biggest club trophies simultaneously.

On Sunday, 19 May, Barcelona became Spanish champions for the 22nd time after a 2-1 victory over Real Valladolid at home before ending its league campaign with 2 more wins against Espanyol 0-2 away on Sunday, 26 May, and Málaga 4-1 at home on Saturday, 1 June.

Also in Spain:
Friday, 17 May. Atlético Madrid ended its 17-year wait by winning the Copa del Rey for the 10th time by defeating city rivals Real 2-1 in a somewhat incident-marred Final at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Real's home turf. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Real in the 14th minute while Diego Costa equalized for Atlético in the 35th minute. After the game ended 1-1 the two Madrid sides went on to play extra-time, where João Miranda scored Atlético's 2nd goal in the 98th minute. 2 players received their 2nd yellow cards during that period; Cristiano Ronaldo gets his in the 115th minute and so too Atlético captain Gabi in the 125th minute. For Real coach José Mourinho, also ordered by the match referee to leave the pitch, it was a sad ending.

Saturday, 11 May. Bayern Munich was crowned German champions for the 23rd time after a 3-0 win at home over Augsburg before completing its league campaign with a 3-4 away win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on Saturday, 18 May.
Also on Saturday, 25 May, Bayern won the UEFA Champions League for the 5th time after defeating 1997 champions Borussia Dortmund 2-1 in the Final at London's Wembley Stadium.
Finally on Saturday, 1 June, the German and European champs lift the German Cup for the 16th time following a 3-2 win over VfB Stuttgart in the Final in Berlin, therefore completing the Treble.

Sunday, 30 June. Brazil wins the FIFA Confederations Cup for the record 4th time on home soil after defeating world and European champions Spain 3-0 in the Final in Rio de Janeiro. Fred gets it first for the hosts in the 2nd minute with a point-blank range while being floored on Spain's goal area and Neymar makes it 2-0 towards halftime with a left foot shot in the 44th minute. Soon after the start of the 2nd half Fred put Brazil upfront in the 47th minute to seal victory as Spain went down to 10 men after Gerard Piqué received his marching orders for fouling Neymar in the 68th minute. During the trophy presentation several players were awarded; the Adidas Golden Ball went to Neymar, who also gets the Budweiser Man of the Match and Bronze Shoe awards, the Silver Ball went to Spain's Andrés Iniesta while his teammate Fernando Torres was awarded the Golden Shoe and Fred won the Silver Shoe; both Torres and Fred became the tournament's top goalscorers with 5 goals each. The FIFA Fair Play Trophy went to Spain, the Bronze Ball went to Brazil's Paulinho and finally his teammate Júlio César won the Golden Glove as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. Parabéns Brasil! (Congratulations Brazil!)

Saturday, 27 July. Bundesliga runners-up Borussia Dortmund win a title, this time the German Supercup, after beating league champs and cup holders Bayern Munich 4-2 at home.

Sunday, 11 August. English champs Manchester United, under new manager David Moyes, win the FA Community Shield after a 2-0 win over FA Cup holders Wigan Athletic at Wembley courtesy of goals from Dutch star Robin van Persie in the 5th and 58th minutes.

Something I forgot nearly a month ago:
Friday, 30 September. UEFA Champions League winners Bayern Munich win the UEFA Super Cup after defeating 10-man Europa League winners Chelsea 5-4 on penalties following a nail-biting 2-2 draw during extra-time in Prague, the Czech capital.
