Sunday, 12 January. Zambia creates history by winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the 1st time after defeating 2006 runners-up the Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties following a goalless draw. The Copper Bullets, as Zambia is known, dedicated its victory to the national team killed in the 1993 air disaster during the 1994 African F.I.F.A. World Cup qualifiers.

Note: Cardiff defender Anthony Gerrard is Steven's cousin and is a former Ireland U-18 player. The word 'Malaysia', which appears on all the jerseys of Cardiff players, pays homage to the club chairman and owner, who are both from that country.

Saturday, 5 May. Chelsea wins the FA Cup for the 7th time after defeating Carling Cup holders Liverpool 2-1 in the Final at Wembley, therefore equalling the Reds' record. Didier Drogba added more misery to Liverpool by scoring the Blues' 2nd goal in the 52nd minute. Andy Carroll, who came on as a substitute for Jay Spearing in the 55th minute, scored for the Reds in the 64th minute and almost made it 2-2 in the 81st minute after his header was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech.
