Friday, 26 August. European and Spanish champions Barcelona win the UEFA Super Cup after defeating Europa League and Portuguese champions Porto 2-0 in Monaco. Lionel Messi put Barcelona in the lead in the 39th minute while Cesc Fàbregas scored the winner in the 88th minute after coming on as a substitute for Pedro 8 minutes earlier. Porto was reduced to 10 men after Rolando received his 2nd yellow card in the 86th minute while Fredy Guarín gets a red card for a sliding challenge on former Liverpool man Javier Mascherano in the 90th minute as the game went into injury time.

Sunday, 18 December. European champions Barcelona win the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup for the 2nd time after demolishing South American champions Santos 4-0 in the Final at Yokohama's International Stadium. Goals came from Argentine ace Lionel Messi, who scored twice for Barcelona (17, 82) then followed by two more from Spanish internationals Xavi (24) and Cesc Fàbregas (45). During the trophy presentation the FIFA Fair Play Award went to Barcelona and the Golden Ball award went to Messi while the Silver Ball went to his teammate Xavi and the Bronze Ball went to Santos' Neymar. Third place went to Asian champions Al-Sadd, who beat Japanese champions and hosts Kashiwa Reysol 5-3 on penalties following a goalless draw earlier before the Final at the same stadium.

Sunday, 12 January. Zambia creates history by winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the 1st time after defeating 2006 runners-up the Ivory Coast 8-7 on penalties following a goalless draw. The Copper Bullets, as Zambia is known, dedicated its victory to the national team killed in the 1993 air disaster during the 1994 African F.I.F.A. World Cup qualifiers.

Saturday, 5 May. Chelsea wins the FA Cup for the 7th time after defeating Carling Cup holders Liverpool 2-1 in the Final at Wembley, therefore equalling the Reds' record. Goals came from Brazilian midfielder Ramires, who put Chelsea in the lead in the 11th minute to make the score 1-0 during halftime. Didier Drogba added more misery to Liverpool by scoring the Blues' 2nd goal in the 52nd minute. Andy Carroll, who came on as a substitute for Jay Spearing in the 55th minute, scored for the Reds in the 64th minute and almost made it 2-2 in the 81st minute after his header was saved by Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Čech.

Saturday, 5 May. German champions Borussia Dortmund successfully retained its title for the 2nd time and 5th time overall after a massive 4-0 victory over Freiburg.
And on Saturday, 12 May, Dortmund ended its 23-year itch by clinching another trophy, this time the German Cup, for the 3rd time after thrashing record-holders Bayern Munich 5-2 in the Final in Berlin, thus completing Die Borussen's league and cup double.

Wednesday, 9 May. After a 2-year wait Atlético Madrid wins the U.E.F.A. Europa League for the 2nd time, this time by defeating fellow Spanish side Athletic Bilbao 3-0 in the Final in Bucharest, the Romanian capital.

Sunday, 20 May. Bayern Munich's hopes of winning the UEFA Champions League for the 5th time shattered following a 3-4 lost to FA Cup winners Chelsea on penalties in the Final at Munich's Allianz Arena (renamed Fussball Arena), the hosts' home ground. After a goalless first half Thomas Müller opened the scoring for Bayern in the 83rd minute while Didier Drogba made it 1-1 for the Blues in the 88th minute, leaving both teams deadlocked after extra-time and the match had to be settled on penalties.
