Seeing that MM had upped his RAM made me think.............

When my PC is doing its daily virus scan it is slow as fuk.

Now I can go to 2048 mb of RAM after some research........
But was considering doubling up the existing as I have 1 spare slot.
At the moment I have 512mb RAM.........
And 2.66Ghz Processor speed.........

Does anyone know if upgrading the RAM will help the slow down I experience
on a virus scan running

rockin, check these guys out http://www.crucial.com/uk/, they are great. Use their scan tool to check out what RAM you need and can use.

They are specialists in Memory, so you should be able to find exactly what you need. And upgrading RAM certainly won't hurt as far as reducing the time your Virus scan takes :D

Thats where I found out what I could use 8)

Its not the time of the scan that hinders me........
Its the slow down while scanning :(

Well in that case extra RAM "should" help. Think of your computer as a library, with the Processor as the head Librarian.

Now think of the RAM as being the junior Librarians who go to look for the books that the Head Librarian asks for, or that you ask the Head Librarian for.

If you ask for a lot of books, or a lot of heavy books, books with a lot of detail, for example scanning the whole of the Library for a certain book...

Then the poor junior librarians have a hard time of it. Maybe its time to recruit some extra staff :D

I wasnt thinking of maxing out to the 2024MB though....
I already have 512MB and was gonna add another 512MB....
£40 seems a fair price........ and as I found the site you recommended I
must have good judgement as well 8)

I kinda fell upon it and wasnt too sure what I needed.........
But after the scan I was a little more knowledgeable 8)
Didnt know how many slots I had.... what I needed or anything :oops:
All I knew was I had 512MB DDR RAM :)

it should help it a bit, but only a bit, virus scan doesnt need much memory and 512 mbs of ram should be enough for any average anti virus program if other applications you're using while its scanning don't use too much memory. the majoy problem re the speed of virus scan is this one:
if you have a slow hard disk the scanner will require more time to scan though your entire hard disk. the memory won't help too much only a bit
so please post the info about your hard disk's speed
and re: upgrading to 2048 mb of ram well it all depends on what do you use your computer for
if its only for surfing the net then its only a waste of money, upgrading to 1028 maybe but 2048 is too much imo
but if you use it to play games, use it to run and work in very demanding applications then upgrading to 2048 mbs would be a very sound decision

Good points, when was the last time you ran a defrag or scan disc on your puter rockin?

Hard Disc is a Maxtor 120GB UDMA/133 5400RPM 2MB IDE HDD :? does that help

I dont use the PC for any games.... thats what consoles are for :|
But it looks like another 512 stick is the answer.... it wont hurt anyway

there's the problem
5400 rpm is slow
you'd better upgrade to 7200 rpm disks or even 10000 rpm which i hear are out

also as far as i know that hard disk is paralel ata right?
new ones have serial ata which also increases the speed

until upgrading maybe defrag would help a bit but be aware of this defraging a 120 gb disk(if its all under one partition) will require shitloads of time with integrated windows defrager so you'd better get some specialised (and better as in faster) application for doing that :)

:shock: Dont wanna go as far as changing the HD
Only got 31 gig in use on HD anyway.............
Windoze defragger took an hour today..........
I do try to do this once a month :err: if I remember
