2003 - Metallica releases its 8th album St. Anger. This album also marks Robert Trujillo's debut as the band's new bassist after replacing Jason Newsted who left in 2001.

1968 - Italy wins the UEFA European Championship for the 1st time on home soil after defeating neighbours Yugoslavia 2-0 in the Final in Rome. The 2 teams drew 1-1 2 days earlier therefore the match had to be replayed.

1976 - Paul McCartney and Wings set a record for an indoor concert crowd when 67,100 fans gathered in Seattle, Washington.

1967 - After wresting the coveted closing spot from the Who, Jimi Hendrix goes to wow concertgoers at the Monterey Pop music festival by setting his guitar on fire during his set.

2003 - The 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup kicks off in France.

1966 - The Beatles gave a concert in Tokyo and over 500 police were needed to keep fans from the stage.

1969 - Led Zeppelin played two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

2003 - France wins the FIFA Confederations Cup for the 2nd time on home soil after beating African champions Cameroon 1-0. During the trophy presentation France captain Marcel Desailly and his Cameroonian counterpart Rigobert Song held the trophy together in honour of Song's teammate Marc-Vivien Foé who collapsed and died on the pitch during the Semifinal match against Copa América champions Colombia 3 days earlier.

1974 - Wings started a seven-week run at #1 on the U.K. album chart with Band on the Run, featuring the title-track, Jet and the U.S. hit Helen Wheels. The album sold over six million copies worldwide.

1859 - Mauna Loa, a volcano in Hawaii, started to erupt and kept going for the next 300 days. It has slow-moving lava so it wasn't as destructive as it sounds and it did make the island a little bit bigger.

1974 - Ed Helms, Daily Show correspondent and many other roles since then, was born
 
1862 – Alvan Graham Clark discovers the white dwarf star Sirius B in the Sirius star system
1944 - Connie Booth, Polly of Fawlty Towers, was born
 
February 25 - The Plum Blossom Festival has been held at a Kyoto shrine on this day for over 900 years. The shrine was built in 947 to appease the angry spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, an exiled poet and politician. There are nearly 2000 plum trees around the shrine, which were Michizane's favorite tree.
