The Formula One Thread

Formula 1’s governing body has unveiled a radical new aerodynamic concept which it believes will transform the quality of the racing, possibly as soon as 2007.

Acting on the results of a detailed survey of F1 fans that highlighted the lack of overtaking as a key concern, the FIA and its technology partner AMD have come up with an innovative solution called the centreline downwash generating (CDG) wing.

Artists’ impressions of the new car reveal a similar front wing to that on current F1 machinery but a low-slung, cut-away rear wing that appears to have a piece removed from the middle.

The primary aim is to reduce the phenomenon known as ‘dirty air’ which makes it difficult for Formula 1 cars to follow each other closely and thus to overtake.

The new wing shape is designed to change the way the air flows over the back of the car so that cars following behind are much less affected by the loss of front downforce and aerodynamic stability than is currently the case.

If successful, this would mean that cars could run in close proximity even through fast corners, a situation that has not been possible since the early 1990s – dramatically improving the prospects for overtaking.

Bernie Ecclestone’s proposed shake-up of the qualifying format and FIA president Max Mosley’s plans to reintroduce tyre changing were both given the green light by the Formula 1 Commission.

The unpopular single-lap qualifying system will be scrapped next year in favour of a three-part session, with two 15-minute ‘knockout’ segments whittling the field down to a group of 10 drivers, who will then fight for pole in a 20-minute open session.

Although the new system is relatively complicated and could potentially confuse casual fans, it is hoped that it will recreate the excitement of pre-2003 qualifying sessions whilst ensuring continuous track action.

"Former grand prix racer Aguri Suzuki has announced plans to enter Formula 1 next season with a new Honda-supported team.

In a press conference in Tokyo on Tuesday morning, Suzuki confirmed that the currently unnamed new squad had already applied for an entry to the 2006 world championship.

The team will use Honda V8 engines and Bridgestone tyres, but Suzuki did not reveal whether it would build its own chassis or use a customer version of the BAR-Honda design.

He admitted that the team faces a race against time, and is relying heavily on Honda’s support.

“As far as the chassis is concerned there is no way we can compete unless there is help from Honda,” Suzuki told autosport.com.

“I'm just hoping that we will have a workforce of at least 100 before the season opener."

Rumours of a Honda B-team have been circulating for several months, with suggestions that the Japanese manufacturer wanted to establish a second string squad where it could place ousted BAR driver Takuma Sato.

Suzuki confirmed that Sato was in contention for a drive with the new team, which will be run out of the old Arrows factory at Leafield, but said he had been considering entering F1 “since February” – long before the B-team rumours surfaced."

Just saw this as well :D

Kimi Raikkonen may have lost the world championship to Fernando Alonso but he is piling up the post-season accolades.

Having been voted Driver of the Year by the readers of F1 Racing magazine, Raikkonen received the coveted International Racing Driver of the Year trophy at the Autosport Awards on Sunday evening.

Reigning world champion Fernando Alonso will leave Renault for McLaren in 2007.

McLaren announced the spectacular coup just days after it unveiled a new title sponsorship deal with telecommunications giant Vodafone, which will also begin in 2007.

“To become part of a team with such a desire to succeed and passion for performance is a dream come true for any Formula 1 driver,” said Alonso.

“I’m very excited about 2007 and the fantastic opportunity to drive for Vodafone McLaren Mercedes.

“It will be a new beginning for me and a tremendous challenge and from what I have heard about this exciting new partnership there is something to look forward to.”

Alonso explained his shock move by saying the opportunity to join McLaren was one he couldn't afford to turn down.

Hope they keep Kimi...what a team that would be :D

Bernie Ecclecake has said that he expects to see Kimi Raikkonen move to
Ferrari in 2007 – but only if Michael Schumacher retires at the end of next
season.
