Saturday dawned wet and chilly at Melbourne, and rain master Michael Schumacher took full advantage by setting the pace from Ferrari team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

Inclement weather traditionally plays into the hands of the Bridgestone runners, although Michelin has laboured long and hard over the last two years to try and catch up.

On this morning’s evidence, the French company still has some work to do. McLaren’s Kimi Raikkonen was fastest for much of the session but was then unceremoniously toppled by the Ferraris in the closing stages.
