Thread to collect tips & information and pieces of writing for a guide on how to Bootleg well. If someone wants to write this article for the site, instead of me, feel free :)
 
Someone should explain first what kind of recording equipment is available and what is difference between them.
 
some words about equipment:

the best way to go is using a portable dat-recorder - minidisc also works but has reduction in quality due to non-losless compression (ATRAC) of course ( went better with every version - I know ) ... of course excellent analog-recorders will work as well as 10 years ago - not to forget the saturation of analog-tapes which is impossible with digital recorders

a must have is a recorder with plugs for an external microphone - forget internal mics ( poor !! ). qualtiy of the mic-preamps are mostly neglected ( means very very poor dynamic range ) so best way is not to take consumer recorders but profesionell recorders from musician-stores.

the mic must not be a to sensitive one due to high sound-level during shows - a good and as linear as possible frequency range is indispensable
