If I do obtain some bootlegs which I find not many people in DC is having yet,
I will placed it in my share folder.
Right now I only know how to convert them to mp3s.
But you guys may prefer it in APE, shn, flac or something.

1) So can someone please guide me on how to convert the audios to your preferred popular choice?
2) Any specific dos or donts I need to watch out?
3) What is the estimate size (mb) in APE, shn , or flac for a full length show?
I got to make space on my hard disk.

thank you.

2) Nope. Use ape format with extra high compression.

3) Files are cca. 65% of wav files size.

That isn't very advisable, extra high compression only saves you a couple of MBs per file. However, with low end machines it can cost you a lot of time compressing extra high. Verdict: In most cases normal compression is advisable. Ugh.

well doesn't mp3 take up less space? if so then why not use mp3 better for everyone?

No. MP3s are lossy and evil. They are compressed and therefore the high frequency sounds from the original WAV are dropped. And that isn't very nice. :banana:

If you want to keep CD audio quality you will not use mp3. Mp3 compression cuts all freq. above 16 kHz and rest is lossy compressed. You can't get lost quality back. With lossless formats you can compress wav to cca. 65% of size and keep 100% audio quality. Nothing is lost. You can compare that with graphic formats:

wav = bmp
ape, shn or flac = gif
mp3 = jpg
