Videogame music gains recognition

The Chicago Tribune posted an article today regarding the rise in brand-name soundtracks within games, which was pioneered by Grand Theft Auto 3, and continued by its successor, Vice City. The latter had a multi disc sountrack, of which one was self-descriptively rock and metal. The article claims that this disc outsold the rest of the collection, which would agree with the current market trends towards more rock/metal orientated bands.

The Chicago Tribune said:
Each "Vice City" CD offers real tunes from the fictional radio stations in the seminal drive-anywhere-do-anything game that has sold 10.5 million copies. The most popular CD, "V-Rock," sold 42,300 copies of music from Van Halen, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Osbourne. Together, the CDs totaled 142,200 units sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan

GTA3 Vice City wasnt the only game to feature Maiden in the recent past, the Tony Hawks series also featured heavy references, including eddie as a bonus character, Iron Maiden skateboard decks, and "The Number of the Beast" in the soundtrack. Its probably not news to most fans, but it might be an interesting discussion topic :)

.

Of course ROCKSTAR released THRASHER Skate & Destroy too....

Video Game music has often been a sort of cult thing, but now everything seems to be merging into one overall audio/visual/gaming experience. I love the soundtracks to GTA Vice City. :)

Anyone remember the sound track to Atari's 720 degrees?

What about Carmageddon2?(Not very new game, but still..) I've heard there's some songs on it from Iron Maiden... I can be wrong...

.

Oh, I think I have Carmageddon 2 for the PC tucked away somewhere. I'll go and dig it out later and have a look.

.

Apparantley it does!

There is a sticker placed on the box, saying 'Featuring Music by Iron Maiden'. No mention in the credits what tracks it is though.

I just placed the CD-ROM into my stereo and skipped past track one, the actual computer software, and there is defintely some music on there! :D

Can't place it name it though.
