no 88k

or

88,000 bytes
wrong
one kilobyte isn't 1000 bytes but 1024 bytes or 2 on tenth level
so 88k is 90112 bytes and not 88000 bytes :P

and don't try to argue with me this is what i learn at collage.....besides the boring stuff

Ok, so how would you recommened i supernet my class B subnet to get a cheeky extra 64 network addressed machines ( bearing in mind the 2 addresses you lose because of the "Broadcast" and "Network address" IP's available) without causing myself some real hard work :|

we haven't got to networks yet. we'll get there in abt years. in a mean time we are learing the very basics of computing like programming in c, displaying of variables in memory and stuff like that

I'm not sure if this was the kind of thing you're talking about, but I'll attempt an answer to this one. I may be completely off track though..

It depends on what type of IP blocks your using. If you've got DHCP assignment of IP's you should be able to change your subnet to like 255.255.0.0 to gain a whole extra addressable set, but you'd have to modify your gateways to drop packets from the IP's outside of the assigned internal ones.

Since you're looking for 64 extra machines, you might be using a 192.168.x.1-255 style IP range with 255.255.255.0 as the subnet, so the above would work. If you're in the 10.x.x.1-255 space, then you wouldnt even have to make any changes to your gateways, as the entire 10.x.x.x space is designated non-routable. (Although, I think the trick would work on a 192.168.x.x network as well).

If its all internet-routable IP space (unlikely, but who knows) then you're most likely screwed and will need to look at using multiple VLANs on routers to simulate one large network. Although Cisco and the like will probably want quite a bit for such functionality.

Disclaimer: I dont guarantee any of the above, applying the changes to a production network may result in death or personal injury, etc etc LOL
