What is a 'soundboard recording'

Can someone explain what a soundboard recording is? Is it different from an audience recording? Am I correct that soundboard recordings generally sound better?
 
Something like this:

instruments/voice > amps/mics > soundboard > speekers > our ears/recording devices

"soundboard recording" is directly from soundboard.
 
Soundboard Front-of-House, Monitor circuit or scanner or ALD all count as soundbaord, basically anthing that is fed by a mixing desk
 
Yes! As a general rule soundboard recordings are usually a better quality and better sounding than an audience recording. Soundboard recording are recorded with professional equiptment where as an audience recording is usually someone with a tape recorder in their pocket hopping about like they are on fire!!! LOL
